Fayetteville State Dominates in Third Consecutive CIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Fayetteville State University racked up 185 points to claim the 2023 CIAA Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships and a third consecutive title at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on Monday. The last women's team to earn three consecutive league titles was Saint Augustine's when it won 14 straight from 1997 to 2010.

M'Smyra Seward, the CIAA Indoor Field Athlete of the Year, captured the triple jump (12.03m, 39-5.75) and the long jump (5.97m, 19-7) titles. She finished second in the high jump (1.61m, 5-3.25). Seward scored a total of 28 points for the Field MVP honors.

Head Coach Inez Turner was chosen as the CIAA Women's Coach of the Year.

 The impressive title run began on Sunday when the Broncos outdistanced themselves with 70 points and a battle for second and third place with Virginia State University scoring 29 points and Winston-Salem State University 21 points.

 VSU finished runner-up (92) and WSSU placed third (68). 

 FSU won the distance medley relay on Sunday and the 4x400m squad closed out the event with the top podium spot. Joan KiplagatJessica McQueenShanae Ingram, and Nia Gibson were the winning legs of the DMR that finished in 13:19.30. Teanna BellJessica McQueenQueen Burnett, and Malaysia Barber ran the 4x4 with a time of 3:57.64.

Ashley Taylor won the shot put with a heave of 12.84m (42-1.5) and Domanique Knowles won the pentathlon with 2,866 points. Knowles also finished third in the high jump.

Fayetteville State also had several podium appearances earning silver and bronze medals. 

Nia Gibson won a silver medal in the mile run (5:38.75) and the 3,000m (11:17.52) for a total of 16 points. 

Tracy Idugboe placed second in the long jump with a mark of 5.38m (17-8) and in the triple jump (12m, 39-4.5).

Queen Burnett finished third in the 200m (25.47 seconds). Jessica McQueen ran an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 57.66 seconds in the 400m for third place. Repline Cheptoo won a bronze medal in the 800m (2:28.09) and the mile (5:38.97). Brenda Cheboi was third in the 3000m (11:18.04).

The NCAA DII National Championship will be held in Pittsburg, Kansas from March 10th through the 11th. Seward, who is currently ranked third in Division II in the long jump (6.10m), is now ranked 15th on the provisional list in the triple jump. Idugboe is 17th on the list for the triple jump. The 4x400m relay is ranked 41st following today's performance. McQueen's 400m 57.66 time converts to 56.91 on a banked track and ranks her 43rd in Division II.
