FAYETTEVILLE, NC --Tairell Fletcher nailed a dagger 3-pointer with 37 seconds left in the fourth quarter to put Fayetteville State ahead 65-58, and the Broncos secured a 67-58 win over the Newberry Wolves at home Saturday.
The Broncos (6-7) had four players score in double figures, led by Kaleb Coleman, who had 20 points. Fletcher tacked on 12 points and six assists and Tyler Foster chipped in as well with 12 points and nine rebounds.
Led by Sean Tony Hauser's four offensive rebounds, Fayetteville State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 15 boards that resulted in 17 second-chance points.
Fayetteville State's defense held Newberry to only 38.1 percent shooting from the field, including 28.6 percent from beyond the arc.
Caleb Byrd was the scoring leader for Newberry (2-7) with 14 points.
How It Happened
After falling behind 19-12, Fayetteville State went on a 7-0 run with 8:11 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Hauser, to tie the game at 19. The Broncos then proceeded to grab a 32-30 lead heading into halftime. Fayetteville State took advantage of seven offensive rebounds to score six second-chance points out of 32 total in the period
Newberry proceeded to take a 52-47 lead before Fayetteville State went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Coleman's jumper, to seize a 55-52 lead with 4:55 to go in the contest. The Broncos kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 67-58 win. Fayetteville State made the most of eight offensive rebounds to tack on 11 second-chance points out of 35 total in the period.
