FAYETTEVILLE, NC --Caleb Simmons scored 23 points to help lead the Fayetteville State men's basketball team over the Bowie State Bulldogs 67-59 at home Thursday.
Simmons added nine rebounds to his 23 point game to lead the Broncos (7-7, 2-2). Tairell Fletcher helped out with 14 points and six rebounds and Sean Tony Hauser chipped in with eight points.
The Bulldogs (6-9, 1-4) leading scorer, Joel Webb, led the team with 13 points.
Fayetteville State out-rebounded Bowie State 32-22 in Thursday's game, led by Simmons' nine boards. The Broncos also grabbed 10 offensive rebounds and scored 13 second chance points.
The Fayetteville State defense caused its share of mistakes in Thursday's game, forcing 18 Bowie State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 19 points on the offensive end of the floor. D'Marco Baucum led the way individually for the Broncos with four steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 5-3, Fayetteville State went on a 10-0 run with 15:36 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Hauser, to take a 13-5 lead. The Broncos then maintained that lead and entered halftime with a 32-24 advantage. Fayetteville State got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for nine of its 32 total points.
The Bulldogs proceeded to tie things up at 35-35 before Fayetteville State went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Kaleb Coleman's three, to seize a 42-35 lead with 14:41 to go in the contest. The Broncos kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 67-59 win. Fayetteville State capitalized on 13 Bowie State turnovers in the period, collecting 17 points off those turnovers.
