GAME 2 | Fayetteville State 13, Saint Augustine's 5
FAYETTEVILLE, NC --Sophomore Kyra Mitchell collected three extra base hits to help lead the Fayetteville State Broncos over the Saint Augustine's Falcons 13-5 on Saturday.
Sophomore BreAnna Steele (7-9) got the win for Fayetteville State (14-15, 10-4). The right-hander went five innings, giving up five runs, four earned, on 10 hits, allowing two walks and striking out three.
Mitchell's three extra base hits were the highlight of a 3-for-3 day, and included two doubles, a home run and three RBI. Steele put together a standout effort as well, going 3-for-3 with four RBI. Senior Grace Vincent also helped out for the Broncos, putting together three hits in three trips to the plate while adding a double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Broncos got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Fayetteville State pushed across two runs in the frame, the big blow coming on an RBI double from Mitchell.
The Falcons failed to push any runs across before the Broncos offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. The Fayetteville State offense exploded for seven runs, highlighted by a three-run single off the bat of Steele and a two-run home run from Mitchell, which brought the score to 9-0 in favor of the Broncos.
Fayetteville State kept Saint Augustine's without a run before building their lead to 12-0 the following inning.
The Falcons gained ground, closing the gap to 12-5 until Fayetteville State added some insurance in the fifth. Steele crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Broncos, bringing the score to 13-5 in favor of Fayetteville State. The score remained 13-5 for the rest of the game, as the Broncos coasted to the win.
