FAYETTEVILLE, NC (April 23, 2022) - Fayetteville State softball team will honor its four seniors during the last doubleheader home game against St. Augustine's University at Lamon Street Park on Saturday, April 23. The first game of the twin bill will begin at 1:00 p.m.
This year's softball roster has four seniors: Sierra Mitchell, Grace Vincent, Angel Johnson, and Mikayla Jackson.
Mitchell, a Morehead City native, defends home plate for the Broncos as the catcher. Inspired by her grandmother, her plans are to pursue a career as a psychologist working with children. She made the decision to major in Psychology so that she could help and work with people, the way that her grandmother has supported her career and sports dreams.
In the crushing win over Lincoln University (Pa.), Sierra was 2-for-4 in the batters' box and contributed four RBIs to help seal the 14-4 victory.
Besides the great contributions Vincent has added to her team, she has big plans following graduation. Instead of preparing for another great season, she will start an internship with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Artificial Intelligence). Grace believes that her work as a data scientist can provide great deals of information on a subject's behaviors and predictions for the future.
The senior outfielder has the hidden talent of juggling and cherishes the memory of advancing to the CIAA Softball championships as a freshman as her favorite softball memory. That year, Vincent (2-for-3) cracked a triple into center field with two RBIs in the late bracket matchup versus Elizabeth City State (9-0 in five innings).
Johnson has the skill set of an Army Swiss knife, batting from either side of the dish, and although she is on the roster as a shortstop and second baseman, her impact expands over into the catcher and center fielder position. With speed to steal bases at will, the best showing in her final season was during the matchup versus Shaw University, where she went 2-for-3 at-bat, featuring a double and two RBIs.
She attributes her drive and work ethic to her papa Samuel Williams, who she says is her greatest inspiration. Like her resume as a Bronco on the diamond, Angel also has her sights set high on leading the next wave of military service members from the front as an officer upon graduation.
A leader on the softball diamond and amongst her thirteen younger siblings Jackson will close her last season as a utility player. The biology major says that she stays loose and ready for games by pumping her pre-game playlist and dancing in the mirror as she dresses out.
Driven by people who share their stories of success despite trials and tribulations, she says that hearing their triumphs motivates her to keep pushing towards her own goals. Mikayla recorded her best performance in the Broncos' win over Clark Atlanta (18-1) during the CIAA/SAAC Challenge where she went 3-for-4 with a 2B and 3 RBIs.
The Broncos compete against Claflin University Friday, April 22 at Lamon Street Park. The first matchup of the doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m. Their senior day matchup will feature St. Augustine's University Saturday, April 23 at the same time and location.
