Fayetteville, NC (February 7, 2022) – Fayetteville State now has the most conference victories in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAA) with a 10-2 record. The Broncos defeated Bowie State 85-67 in Capel Arena for a 15-7 overall standing. The visiting Bulldogs drop to 7-16 overall and 5-7 in the conference.
Jalen Seegars and
Cress Worthy eclipsed the 20-point mark as Seegars finished with 25 points for the second time this season. Averaging 18.4 points per game, he has tallied 20 or more points ten times this season. Worthy put up 21 points to improve his average to 14.7 per game. The game turned into a highlight reel as the duo, along with
Zion Cousins (who finished with ten points) and
Joshua Wiggins (six points) had a jam fest with slam dunks.
Fayetteville State pulled away from the Bulldogs in the first half after a jumper by Seegars sparked an 8-0 run at the three-minute clip. After the jumper, Seegars returned down the court to make one of his four-made three-pointers. On the Broncos' next possession, Worthy nailed one of his four three-pointers too. The field goal by Cress gave FSU its biggest lead of the half (35-21) with 1:53 left.
After trailing 36-26 at the half, Bowie State would manage to cut the score down to 39-34 behind a three-ball by Khalil Williams. Williams and Quinton Drayton led the effort with 17 points each. David McCullough added 11 points.
Worthy's matching three-pointer would start a Bronco onslaught. The basket would lead to a 27-7 run where the only points made by the Bulldogs were free throws. The period between BSU's field goals was about eight minutes. FSU would lead by 29 (83-54) with 2:54 left in the game.
Cress Worthy scored the first dunk for the Broncos in the first half. After making 1-of-2 free throws from a harsh foul, Worthy pulled down a defensive board and it was off to the races with the fast break jam.
Darryl Myers entered the highlight reel with a fast break dunk for a 44-34 lead in the second half. Seegars had one of his own for a 56-37 lead.
Joshua Wiggins got everybody out of their seats with a slam that led to a technical foul. As the fans cheered him on, so did the bench. It took a few moments to calm them down.
On FSU's next trip down the court, Cousins put one down. Wiggins had another show time dunk after picking the Bulldogs' pocket and the fast break score.
Fayetteville State will look to avenge its first conference loss of the season to Livingstone on Thursday in Capel Arena. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance for Greek Night and facial coverings are required for the game.
