Fayetteville NC (February 10, 2022) – Fayetteville State (16-7 overall and 11-2 in the CIAA) made 3-of-4 free throws in the final 42 seconds to dismantle Livingstone (10-8, 7-5) for a 71-69 victory.
It was almost déjà vu for the Broncos who lost their first conference game to the Blue Bears on January 19
th. Seegars missed a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left in regulation which could have given FSU a one-point lead. After a three-pointer by
Cress Worthy, the game went into overtime, where Livingstone won 81-77. LC made 3-of-4 free throws in the overtime period.
On a night where the Broncos leading scorer (Seegars) struggled from the field with seven points, three of his teammates stepped up to assist in the victory.
Cress Worthy scored a team-high 19 points and dished out a season-high six assists.
Zion Cousins had a double-double of 16 points and a dozen rebounds while Darion Dixon netted 17 points and 8 rebounds.
The game played close in the first half with 15 score ties and an even game at 38 going into halftime.
Fayetteville State broke the 40-40 tie in the second half with a 9-0 run and maintained the lead throughout the game. FSU led by as many as ten (54-44), but the Blue Bears trailed by one (67-68) with 1:17 left in the game. Cousins' pair of free throws were not enough as Livingstone made a pair of their own with 16 seconds left.
Following a Blue Bear four at the seven-second spot, Seegars made one of his pair of free throws.
LC's Kyrie Temple, who led the game with 25 points, threw up a desperation shot from beyond the three-point range that didn't have a chance.
Fayetteville State will travel to Winston-Salem State on Saturday to challenge the Rams for the number one spot in the CIAA Southern Division. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
