HAMPTON, Ga. --Though they had plenty of opportunities, Fayetteville State struggled to cash them in, leaving 10 Broncos on base in a 6-5 defeat at the hands of the Benedict Tigers on Saturday.
Freshman BreAnna Steele started and took the loss in the circle for Fayetteville State (2-6 overall).
In the batter's box, the Broncos were led by freshman Kyra Mitchell, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a home run, a walk and three RBIs. Freshman Laniyah Bethea compiled a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Broncos got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Fayetteville State scored twice, with one run coming across on Bethea's single.
The Broncos lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the third trailing 4-2. Fayetteville State scored twice on Mitchell's two-run homer, which brought the score level at 4-4.
Benedict broke that tie and took a 6-4 lead heading into the fifth, when Fayetteville State closed the gap to 6-5. The Broncos were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
