FAYETTEVILLE, NC --The Fayetteville State men's basketball team carried a 30-29 lead into halftime, but came up short down the stretch in a 68-58 loss to the North Carolina-Pembroke Braves in their home opener on Wednesday night.
The Broncos (1-2) had two players score in double figures, led by Cress Worthy, who had 18 points and two steals. Tyler Foster added 11 points and seven rebounds from the bench and Tony Hauser added nine points and eight rebounds.
Hauser pulled down four offensive rebounds to lead the Fayetteville State offense which grabbed 14 boards and turned them into 19 second chance points.
Fayetteville State forced 17 North Carolina-Pembroke turnovers while committing 13 themselves in Wednesday's game. The Broncos turned those takeaways into 22 points on the other end of the floor. Kaleb Coleman led the way individually with two steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 27-22, Fayetteville State went on a 5-0 run with 2:59 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Worthy, to tie the game at 27. The Broncos then proceeded to grab a 30-29 lead heading into halftime. Fayetteville State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 30 points.
North Carolina-Pembroke then erased the Fayetteville State lead in the game's final quarter for a 68-58 comeback victory. Fayetteville State capitalized on eight North Carolina-Pembroke turnovers in the period, collecting 10 points off those turnovers.
