ATLANTA, Forbes Arena --The Fayetteville State men's basketball team got a 14-point performance from the bench, but fell 43-40 to the Tuskegee Golden Tigers (4-0 overall) at Friday's ATL HBCU Challenge on the campus of Morehouse College in the Forbes Arena.
Cress Worthy led the Broncos (1-3 overall) with 15 points, eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Marcus Elliott tacked on two points, five assists and two steals and Nakwan James chipped in as well with six points and two steals off of the bench.
Led by Worthy's three offensive rebounds, Fayetteville State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 13 boards that resulted in 13 second chance points.
The Fayetteville State defense caused its share of mistakes in Friday's game, forcing 14 Tuskegee turnovers while committing 10. Those takeaways turned into eight points on the other end of the floor. James' two steals led the way individually for the Broncos.
How It Happened
After falling behind 18-8, Fayetteville State went on a 6-0 run with 3:25 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Kaleb Coleman, to narrow its deficit to 18-14. The Broncos deficit remained the same as they entered halftime trailing 20-16.
Fayetteville State narrowed its deficit to 34-33 before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Tyler Foster's jumper, to seize a 39-34 lead with 4:27 to go in the contest. Tuskegee re-asserted control, outscoring the Broncos 9-1 the rest of the way to hand Fayetteville State the 43-40 loss. Fayetteville State got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for nine of its 24 total points.
The game was tied 39-all with 1:26 left in the game and FSU trailed by one (41-40) with 41 ticks left on the clock. A Broncos missed jumper and foul with three seconds left gave the Golden Tigers the opportunity for two made free throws and the victory.
