Keyshawn James will travel to New Orleans to take part in the HBCU Legacy Bowl on Saturday after Super Bowl LVI at Yulman Stadium at Tulane University.
The HBCU Legacy Bowl, presented by the Black College Football Hall of Fame, is a postseason all-star game showcasing the best NFL draft-eligible football players from Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The NFL Network will broadcast the inaugural Bowl on Saturday, February 19 at 4:00 pm with Steve Wyche (play-by-play), Charles Davis (game analyst), and Bucky Brooks (field analyst) on the call for live coverage.
Players from the CIAA and the MEAC will make up Team Gaither. The team is named after legendary Florida A&M University football coach Jake Gaither. Damon Wilson (Bowie State University) and Oliver "Buddy Pough (South Carolina State University) will guide the squad.
Players from the SIAC and the SWAC will make up Team Robinson. The team is named after legendary Grambling State University football coach Eddie Robinson. Their coaches are Gabe Giardina (Albany State University) and Willie Simmons (Florida A&M University).
Offensive linemen
Greg Brooks and
Jaylan Galloway helped lead an offensive unit that was responsible for the Broncos finishing second in the CIAA in both scoring offense (32.9 points per game) and total offense (394.4 yards per game) while giving up a league-low 13 sacks throughout the regular season.
Brooks, a native of Walkertown, NC, is a three-time All-CIAA selection (2017, 2019, and 2021) and earned All-Region honors in 2019. Before Fayetteville State's fourth consecutive conference championship appearance,
Greg Brooks was honored as the Offensive Lineman of the Year.
Galloway is a native of Hope Mills, NC, and was named a First-Team All-Conference honoree in 2019 and 2021. He was an honorable mention in 2018.
Keyshawn James, from Cayce, SC, led Division II with 23.5 tackles for a loss and ranks sixth in the nation with 1.05 sacks per game. His 10.5 sacks are tied at the top of the conference. The defensive lineman helped Fayetteville State lead the CIAA in scoring defense at 12 points per game and total defense at 203.1 yards per game during the regular season.
James is the 2021 CIAA Defensive Player of the Year and Food Lion Runner-up Game MVP. He was on the 2017 CIAA All-Rookie Team, the 2019 and 2021 All-Conference Teams, and the Box-To-Row All-American Team.
Elvin De La Rosa (Winston-Salem, NC) was the 2017 CIAA Defensive Rookie of the Year and All-Conference in 2018 and pre-season All-CIAA in 2019. He ranks third on the team with 45 tackles.
"The HBCU Legacy Bowl means opportunity and exposure for HBCU players and coaches," said Co-Founder and Inductee Doug Williams. "We're excited to have this in New Orleans, especially during Black History Month."
More than a football game, the week-long celebration of Black culture and history will provide invaluable exposure for HBCU football players and coaches. Approximately 100 of the top HBCU players will be invited to participate.
