Kingsville, Texas – Fayetteville State Track & Field had All-American performances at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in Kingsville, Texas by way of
Tawana Allen and
Jerinique Brooks.
Freshman
Tawana Allen (Kingston, Jamaica) made her second appearance at the national level in the 400m and reached First Team All-American status with a sixth-place finish in the finals. In early March, Allen participated at the Indoor Track & Field Nationals in Pittsburg, Kansas and finished 16
th overall with a preliminaries time of 56.45 seconds.
Allen entered the outdoor championships ranked 13
th out of 20 qualifiers with her personal best mark of 54.29 seconds. In the third heat of the preliminaries, Tawana crossed the finish line third, just a few hundreds of a second off her best. The clocked time of 54.96 seconds ranked her seventh heading into the Finals. In the final race of the 2019 outdoor season,
Tawana Allen earn the accolade and a NCAA trophy with the 55.77 sixth-place finish.
Jerinique Brooks (Junior – Nassau, Bahamas) had the seventh fastest time out of 21 qualifiers entering the outdoor nationals in the 200 meters with a personal best 23.76. Running in the preliminaries against a 2.9 miles per hour wind gust, Brooks advanced to Finals third in the second heat with a 24.31 performance which ranked seventh overall.
The number seven may just be her lucky number as Jerinique finished seventh in the 200m Finals with a time of 24.60 seconds (against a 5.1 wind gust).
Both student-athletes earning First Team All-American honors may be the first in Fayetteville State history for track and field.
Head Coach
Inez Turner will look back at the 2018-2019 season with much revere. The women's cross-country team won back-to-back Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) championships.
Nelly Kandie was named the Cross-Country Runner of the Year and Turner was named the Women's Coach of the Year.
The women's indoor track and field team finished third overall with one event champion and 12 All-CIAA performers (finished third-place or better).
Nelly Kandie won the 3,000 meters.
Tawana Allen was the only national qualifier.
The outdoor track team finished second overall at the CIAA Championships with the 4x100m championship and 12 All-CIAA performers. In addition to Allen and
Jerinique Brooks qualifying for Nationals, the Broncos 4x100-meter relay squad also qualified but was disqualified in its preliminary race.
