FSU Broncos Sweep Shaw in Quest for a CIAA Appearance

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Fayetteville, NC – Fayetteville State captured an exciting doubleheader sweep of Shaw University at Lamon Street Park to continue its quest for a CIAA Championship Tournament appearance. The Broncos, 5-9 in conference play and 2-6 against the Southern Division, took a 6-3 victory over the Bears (3-13 CIAA, 2-8 Division) in the opening game. FSU stole a pair of runs in extra innings of the second game to complete the sweep with a 4-3 win.

In the first game, Nicole Brown singled in the first inning to make way for Alex White to give FSU a 1-0 lead after one inning.

In the top of the fifth inning, Shaw turned the tides with a two-run inning after two hits and two fielding errors.

The Broncos matched the Bears' runs when Brown earned another RBI with a single and Madison Mendoza singled up the middle for a 3-2 lead over Shaw.

Shaw tied the game at 3-3 in the opening half of the sixth, until Ashlyn Zook hit a two-run single to regain the final lead. Alex White laid out a sacrifice bunt for the 6-3 victory.

The second win was a little more exciting than the Broncos first divisional win of the season.

Shaw jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the opening half of the second half and held a 2-1 advantage over the Broncos after one inning. Fayetteville State notched things up in the third inning which continued through the regulation seven innings.

In the international tie-breaker extra inning, the Bears scored a run on a fielder's choice for a 3-2 lead before ending their outing at bat.

With a Cheyene Ingram placed on second base via the international rule, Timmya Williams reached first on a field error by the second baseman while Ingram advanced to third. Williams stole second before FSU registered its first out.

After a couple pitches, Ingram beat a failed pickoff and tied the game, 3-3 by stealing home. On the same play, Williams continued her track behind Ingram to third and before the dust would settle, she slide into home play with the Bears catching anticipating a collision. Amid the largest cloud of dust, the umpire waved both arms in a bird-like manner to signify Williams as safe at home.

The call sent the Bronco bench into a frenzy with the doubleheader victory.

Fayetteville State needs a pair of wins against Monday's opponent Saint Augustine's and a sweep against the winless Blue Bears of Livingstone for a trip to the CIAA Championship Tournament.
