Columbia, SC ââ'¬" The Fayetteville State University women's softball team won game one (12-6) then lost game two (11-8) of a non-conference doubleheader against Benedict College on Thursday, February 23rd at the Benedict Field. FSU moves to 4-4 in the standings, while the Lady Tigers are 4-9 overall.
In the first contest, Benedict scored the first run of the game off a RBI double to left field from Erika Dargan. FSU faced a small 1-0 deficit until the top of the second inning. Junior left fielder Maggie Smith (Fayetteville, NC) smashed a solo homerun to tie the game 1-1.
The Lady Tigers produced two hits and two runs in the third to recapture a 3-1 advantage. FSU answered in the fourth inning with five hits and three runs, including a 2-RBI homerun from junior third baseman Kortni Adams (Sabattus, ME). Benedict regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth with two hits and three runs of their own.
Fayetteville State trailed 6-4 entering the fifth. The Lady Broncos exploded for eight runs off seven hits in the top of the fifth. FSU had seven RBIs in the inning, including a 2-RBI double from junior catcher Shi-Cara Goins (Asheboro, NC). Neither teams produced any additional runs in the contest.
Junior pitcher Carley Green (Fayetteville, NC) earned with victory with five strikeouts pitching from end to end. Smith had three hits, three runs scored, and two RBIs. Goins tabbed three RBIs, two hits, and one run scored. Fayetteville State had 14 hits compared to seven hits for the Lady Tigers.
In game two, BC scored first again with one run the bottom of the first. The Lady Broncos tacked on two runs in the third to grab a 2-1 lead. Benedict took a commanding 7-2 advantage with six runs scored in the bottom of the third. Sharik Woods drilled a 3-RBI homer to centerfield in the inning.
Fayetteville State trimmed their deficit to 7-4 with two runs scored in the fourth. Benedict added to their lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. FSU made one final push with three hits and four runs in the top of the sixth inning. However, the Lady Tigers held onto their advantage and tacked on a run in the sixth to account for the 11-8 final.
Freshman utility Courtney Pierre (Vanceboro, NC) had two RBIs and a hit off two at-bats. Smith had two hits and one run scored. Senior pitcher Kyrin Walker (Carthage, NC) suffered the loss with seven runs and six hits allowed in two innings pitched.
The Lady Broncos return to the ballpark on Sunday, February 26th in a non-conference doubleheader against Barton College. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on the campus of Barton in Wilson, NC.
