Fayetteville, NC ââ'¬" The Fayetteville State University women's softball team defeated St. Andrews University in both games (7-6, 10-1) of a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, February 16th at Lamon Street Park. FSU improves to 3-1 overall, while the Knights fall to 4-6 in the overall standings.
Fayetteville State held St. Andrews scoreless in the first three innings with junior pitcher Carley Green (Fayetteville, NC) on the mound. Meanwhile, the Lady Broncos produced two runs in the bottom of the first and third innings. Junior catcher Shi-Cara Goins (Asheboro, NC) blasted a 2-RBI homerun to left field for the initial runs in the first inning.
Goins and Green crossed home plate in the third to extend the FSU lead to 4-0. The Knights snapped their scoreless drought in the top of the fourth. Brennan Broadaway reached base on an error at first. She later scored in the inning off a fielder's choice RBI by Mekayla Valentine.
St. Andrews tacked on three runs off four hits in the top of the fifth. The Lady Broncos broke the 4-4 tie with four hits and two runs in the sixth inning. Both sophomore infielder Alex White (Fayetteville, NC) and junior shortstop Brittany Lee (Newton, NJ) recorded singles and runs in the inning. The Knight managed to knot up the game again with two hits and two runs in the top of the seventh.
FSU faced a 6-6 tie entering the bottom of the seventh inning. Junior left fielder Maggie Smith (Fayetteville, NC) stepped up to the plate and belted a walk-off homerun to left field to capture a 7-6 victory for Fayetteville State in game one.
Green was credited with the win after pitching six innings with four strikeouts. Senior pitcher Kyrin Walker (Carthage, NC) took the mound in the seventh and earned the save.
The Lady Broncos absolutely dominated the second contest. St. Andrews claimed their one and only run in the top of the first. Senior first baseman HaLee Knowles (Wallace, NC) had a 2-RBI double to centerfield to spark the scoring in the bottom of the first. Smith and junior third baseman Kortni Adams (Sabattus, ME) also had RBIs in the initial inning.
Fayetteville State added four more runs with three hits in the second inning. The Knights trailed 8-1 entering the fourth. The Lady Broncos had four hits and two runs in the bottom of the fourth, including a solo homer by Green. FSU capped the game with a 10-1 win in the fifth inning due to the NCAA run rule.
Walker pitched four of the five innings with three strikeouts with the victory. Senior utility Zoe Howard (Hampstead, NC) got the save by taking the mound in the final inning.
The Lady Broncos return to the diamond at home for their next matchup against Davis and Elkins College on Sunday, February 19th. First pitch in this non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the Lamon Street Park.
