Fayetteville, NC ââ'¬" The Fayetteville State University women's softball team dropped game one (5-0) and then rebounded with a 9-6 win over Winston-Salem State University in a Southern Division doubleheader on Friday, April 8th at Lamon Street Park. FSU improves to 11-17 overall and 5-3 in the CIAA standings.
FSU fell behind early in the first game of the afternoon. Winston-Salem State produced four hits and three runs in the top of the first inning. WSSU added two runs in the top of the third to increase their lead to 5-0.
The Lady Broncos had four hits in the final five innings, including three hits in the seventh. However, WSSU maintained their shutout victory in game one. Mercedes Hargett recorded the win with five strikeouts and only four hits in seven innings pitched.
Game two had much better offensive results for Fayetteville State. Senior outfielder Alex Wickham (Fayetteville, NC) hit a RBI single through the right side to score senior outfielder Shae Barnes (Gibson, NC) from second base. Junior utility Zoe Howard (Hampstead, NC) scored later in the inning from third base off a passed ball. Sophomore catcher Shi-Cara Goins (Asheboro, NC) had a RBI double in the inning to bring home the third run.
Fayetteville State held a 3-0 lead until the bottom of the third inning. In the third, the Lady Broncos tacked on three more runs, including a 2-RBI homerun from junior pitcher Kyrin Walker (Carthage, NC) facing a full count.
WSSU faced a 6-0 deficit entering the fourth inning. The Lady Rams broke the scoreless drought with three hits and three runs in the top of the fourth. Jasmine Holloman had a 2-RBI double to bring home Melissa Carillo and Katherine Zimmer in the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, Wickham and sophomore outfielder Maggie Smith (Fayetteville, NC) both smacked homerun to add to the Lady Broncos advantage. Fayetteville State held a 9-3 lead at the end of the fourth.
Winston-Salem State scored one run in each of the last three innings. However, FSU preserved their lead en route to a 9-6 victory. Walker collected the win for game two on the mound.
Fayetteville State will return to their home diamond on Monday, April 11th against Bluefield State College in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Lamon Street Park.
