Fayetteville, NC ââ'¬" The Fayetteville State University women's softball team defeated Bluefield College 3-1 in game one, then lost game two 2-0 in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, March 2nd at the Lamon Street Park. FSU moves to 4-6 in the overall standings.
The Lady Broncos ignited with three hits and two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Junior utility Zoe Howard (Hampstead, NC) and sophomore catcher Shi-Cara Goins (Asheboro, NC) both singled to take base. Junior third baseman HaLee Knowles (Teachey, NC) doubled down the leftfield line to score Howard. Goins later scored off a RBI hit from senior outfielder Shae Barnes (Gibson, NC).
FSU added a run in the second inning. Senior outfielder Alex Wickham (Fayetteville, NC) hit a sacrifice ground out to score sophomore pitcher Carley Green (Fayetteville, NC) from third base. Fayetteville State held a 3-0 lead until the sixth inning.
Kate Pennington recorded the only hit and run for the Rams in the top of the sixth. Neither team would produce another run in the contest. Green earned the victory on the mound. She had four strikeouts and only allowed six hits and one run.
The second game began with two scoreless innings. Baily Garin connected on a RBI double in the top of the third. FSU got out of the inning only allowing one run and two hits. No runs were scored again until the seventh.
Bluefield added a run in the top of the seventh off a RBI single from Ali Bartley. Unfortunately, the Lady Broncos failed to muster up a run in the second game. The Rams earned a 2-0 win for a split on the day.
Despite the loss, junior pitcher Kyrin Walker (Carthage, NC) only allowed four hits and two runs with six strikeouts.
Fayetteville State returns to the diamond on Sunday, March 13th against Brevard College. First pitch in this non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Lamon Street Park.
