Fayetteville, NC ââ'¬" The Fayetteville State University women's softball team split games with Davis & Elkins College in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday, February 21st at Lamon Street Park. FSU defeated the Senators 6-5 in the first game, and then lost 12-2 in the second game. The Lady Broncos move to 3-5 overall in the standings.
Junior third baseman HaLee Knowles (Teachey, NC) smacked a 2-RBI double in the bottom of the first inning to ignite the scoring. Knowles batted in junior utility Zoe Howard (Hampstead, NC) and sophomore catcher Shi-Cara Goins (Asheboro, NC) with the hit. The Lady Broncos had four hits along with those two runs in the first inning.
FSU maintained a 2-0 lead until the fifth inning. Davis & Elkins added two runs off a single up the middle from Kayla Whoolery. Junior outfielder Alex Wickham (Fayetteville, NC) broke the 2-2 tie in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs recorded and facing a full court, Wickham hammered a homerun to centerfield.
The Senators answered in the sixth inning. Katelyn Norton doubled to right field to score Alyssa Cairns at second. The contest remained tied 3-3 through the seventh inning. Davis & Elkins moved ahead by scoring two runs in the top of the eighth.
Fayetteville State faced a 5-3 deficit entering the bottom of the eighth. Sophomore pitcher Carley Green (Fayetteville, NC) hit a clutch single with bases loaded to score Goins from third.
Senior short stop Haley Wood (Spring Hope, NC) won the game by doubling to centerfield. Sophomore outfielder Maggie Smith (Fayetteville, NC) and freshman utility Alex White (Fayetteville, NC) crossed home plate as the game-winning runs.
Game two started off with a scoreless first inning. Davis & Elkins broke the game open with an eight-run second inning. The Lady Broncos produced runs in the third and fifth innings. However, those two runs would be the only runs scored in the contest.
The Senators added three runs in the seventh to account for the 12-2 final. FSU had nine hits in the second game, including three from Goins.
Fayetteville State returns to action on Tuesday, February 23rd against Francis Marion University. First pitch in the non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in Florence, SC.
