FAYETTEVILLE STATE SOFTBALL SPLITS HOME DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST BARTON

Fayetteville, NC ââ'¬" The Fayetteville State University women's softball team beat Barton College 3-2 in game one then dropped game two 9-2 in their non-conference doubleheader on Sunday, February 14th at Lamon Street Park. FSU moves to 2-2 in the overall standings, while the Lady Bulldogs open the season at 1-1.

The first contest remained scoreless for the first three innings. Freshman pitcher Carley Green (Fayetteville, NC) held command on the mound. She allowed no runs or hits in the first three.

In the fourth, Barton produced four hits and scored a run with bases loaded. Green got out of the fourth with only one run scored and three left on base. FSU tied the score in the bottom of the fifth. Senior outfielder Alex Wickham (Fayetteville, NC) drilled a homerun to right centerfield. She produced the only run and hit in the inning.

Junior third baseman HaLee Knowles (Teachey, NC) gave the Lady Broncos a one run advantage in the sixth. Knowles homered to deep left field for a 2-1 FSU lead. In the top of the seventh, Megan Kelly answered for Barton with a homerun to start the inning. Green only allowed that one run and hit.

Game one entered extra innings tied 2-2. The Lady Bulldogs were three up and three down in the top of the eighth. In the bottom, senior outfielder Shae Barnes (Gibson, NC) hit a sacrifice fly to left, which scored sophomore Shi-Cara Goins (Asheboro, NC) from third.

Green earned the 3-2 win for Fayetteville State on the mound. She only gave up five hits and two runs.

In game two, the Lady Broncos had their only offense come in the second and third innings. Barnes singled to take base and eventually scored on a RBI single from junior utility Zoe Howard (Hampstead, NC) in the second. Wickham homered to right center in the third inning for her second homerun of the day.

Barton manufactured four runs in the second inning, two runs in the fourth and fifth innings, and scored a run in the sixth to account for the 9-2 final.

Fayetteville State returns to action on Saturday, February 20th against St. Andrews College. First pitch in this non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Laurinburg, NC.
