Fayetteville, NC - The Fayetteville State University women's softball team split their divisional doubleheader against Shaw University on Friday, April 24th on Sanders Field at Seabrook Park. FSU dropped game one 7-5, but rebounded with a 7-1 victory in game two. The Lady Broncos move to 15-11 overall, 10-4 in the CIAA, and 5-3 in the Southern Division.
Fayetteville State allowed the first game to get away due to a rough seventh inning. Shaw trailed 5-4 entering the seventh. Both teams were scoreless the opening three innings. The Lady Bears squeezed in two hits and a run in the fourth.
FSU captured the lead with two runs scored in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman catcher Shi-Cara Goins (Asheboro, NC) smashed a single to deep left field to bring home freshman shortstop Kortni Adams (Sabattus, ME) and junior centerfielder Alex Wickham (Fayetteville, NC).
Each team produced three runs in the sixth; including a 2-RBI double to the left side by Goins. FSU unraveled in the seventh, allowing three hits and three runs. Shanice Anderson had a big hit to right center to bring in two runs. The Lady Bears forced a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to grab the win.
Freshman pitcher Carley Green (Fayetteville, NC) suffered the loss on the mound pitching six of seven innings played. Sophomore pitcher Skyler Peebles (Raleigh, NC) checked in to pitch in the sixth.
Shaw started with a spark in game two, but fizzled out during the duration of the contest. Chakiryn Jackson had a RBI double to left field in the top of the first. The Lady Bears maintained a 1-0 advantage until the third.
The Lady Broncos loaded the bases in the bottom of the third. Green, Wickham, and sophomore pitcher Zoe Howard (Hampstead, NC) all took base on balls. Goins hit a sacrifice shot to score Green and tie the game 1-1.
Junior outfielder Shae Barnes (Gibson, NC) scored in the fourth off an error by the catcher. FSU broke the game open with four runs scored in the fifth. Sophomore third baseman Rebekah Reep (Fayetteville, NC) racked up three RBIs with a double to deep right field.
Shaw went scoreless and hitless in the sixth and seventh innings. The Lady Broncos added a run in the sixth to account for the 7-1 final score.
Howard earned the victory in game two. She pitched the complete game with six strikeouts and only four hits and one run allowed.
Fayetteville State returns to the diamond for the regular season finale against Saint Augustine's University on Monday, April 27th. The Lady Broncos will also host its "Ball in Pink" softball game. All cancer survivors and fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game.
The "Ball in Pink" game was rescheduled from its original April 25th date due to pending weather conditions. This contest is meant to help raise money and spotlight breast cancer awareness. The money raised at the FSU game will benefit FSU assistant athletics trainer Erin Dowd, who is in the midst of her own battle with breast cancer.
Game time in this divisional doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. from Sanders Field at Seabrook Field. Dowd will be in attendance to throw out the ceremonial first pitch of the game.
