April 10, 2015 Salisbury, NC - The Fayetteville State University women's softball team dominated Livingstone College (12-0, 10-1) in a divisional doubleheader sweep on Wednesday, April 8th at the Jaycee Sports Complex. FSU sits atop of the CIAA Southern Division and improves to 13-9 overall and 8-2 in the conference.
After a scoreless first inning, the Lady Broncos exploded with four runs in the second. Sophomore third baseman Rebekah Reep (Fayetteville, NC) and freshman pitcher Carley Green (Fayetteville, NC) both took base on balls. Sophomore right fielder Ivory Gladden (Greensboro, NC) recorded two RBIs with a triple, which scored Reep and Green.
Junior center fielder Alex Wickham (Fayetteville, NC) followed behind Gladden with a homerun. Livingstone trailed 4-0 until the fourth inning. In the fourth, the Lady Broncos racked up three hits and added two runs to the scoreboard.
The Lady Blue Bears faced a 6-0 deficit going into the sixth inning. Fayetteville State doubled their run total with six runs off three hits and three errors in the sixth.
Green pitched five of the six innings to earn the shut out win. She faced 19 at-bats with eight strikeouts, seven forced outs and only four hits allowed. Sophomore pitcher Skyler Peebles (Raleigh, NC) closed out the game in the sixth with one strikeout and one hit off four at-bats.
Neither team scored until the second inning of game two. Fayetteville State produced two runs off three hits and an error in the top of the second. Reep, Green, and freshman utility Kortni Adams (Sabattus, ME) all had hits in the inning.
Livingstone managed to score a run in the bottom of the second. LaPria Saunders walked and later scored an unearned run off a throwing error by the catcher. After a scoreless third, FSU held a 2-1 lead going into the fourth inning.
The Lady Broncos put game two out of reach with four hits and five runs in the top of the fourth. Wickham and junior right fielder Shae Barnes (Gibson, NC) both had 2-RBI doubles in the inning. Livingstone dropped game two 10-1 in five innings due to the NCAA eight-run rule.
Sophomore pitcher Zoe Howard (Hampstead, NC) recorded the victory on the mound. She had 10 forced outs and four strikeouts with two hits and one run off 17 at-bats. Wickham had four RBIs in game two for a total of seven RBIs for the day.
Fayetteville State will return to the diamond on Saturday, April 19th in a divisional doubleheader against Johnson C. Smith University. First pitch is scheduled for 12 noon at Biddleville Park in Charlotte, NC.
