Fayetteville, NC - The Fayetteville State University women's softball team defeated Davis and Elkins College (2-1; 5-2) in a non-conference doubleheader at Leonard R. Sanders Field on Wednesday, March 4th. The Lady Broncos improve to 3-1 overall, while the Senators fall to 2-6 in the standings.
FSU scored all the runs needed to win game one in the third inning. After two and a half scoreless innings, junior shortstop Haley Wood (Spring Hope, NC) scored off a sacrifice shot from junior center fielder Alex Wickham (Fayetteville, NC). Sophomore utility Zoe Howard (Hampstead, NC) earned a RBI with a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home sophomore right fielder Ivory Gladden (Greensboro, NC) from third.
The Lady Broncos finished the third inning with two hits and two runs scored. Davis and Elkins trailed 2-0 until the seventh and final inning. Samantha Smith reached base off an error at first. Taylor Norton smacked a double up the center of the field and scored Smith.
Howard gave up the run, but closed out the game with only one hit and one run to earn the save. Freshman pitcher Carley Green (Fayetteville, NC) picked up the win with five innings of work. Green faced 21 batters, only allowing three walks, four hits, and two strikeouts.
Fayetteville State carried the confidence of the 2-1 game one victory into the second contest. The Lady Broncos struck again in the third inning. With bases loaded, freshman catcher Shi-Cara Goins (Asheboro, NC) hit a sac-fly to centerfield and brought home Wickham from third. Freshman catcher Vanessa Kokoszka (Sanford, NC) singled up the middle and Howard made her way to home plate.
The Senators trailed 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth. FSU exploded for three more runs in the fifth, including a 2-RBI double to center field from sophomore third baseman Rebekah Reep (Fayetteville, NC).
The Lady Broncos maintained a 5-0 lead and sophomore pitcher Kyrin Walker (Carthage, NC) held Davis and Elkins scoreless until the sixth inning. Katelyn Norton hammered a 2-RBI homerun to right center to break the scoreless drought for the Senators. Those would be the only runs scored for Davis and Elkins in the contest.
Walker earned the win and Green checked in for the last two batters in a save effort.
Fayetteville State will return to the diamond on Saturday, March 14th in a home non-conference doubleheader against Bluefield State College at Leonard R. Sanders Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
