Winston-Salem, NC - The Fayetteville State University women's softball team dropped game one 4-3 and won game two 8-0 in a CIAA divisional doubleheader versus Winston-Salem State University on Sunday, March 29th at Salem College Field. FSU improves to 10-6 overall and 6-2 in the conference.
The Lady Broncos opened up game one with the initial score. Junior centerfielder Alex Wickham (Fayetteville, NC) took base on balls. Freshman catcher Shi-Cara Goins (Asheboro, NC) brought home Wickham and earned a RBI with a single to left center. FSU held a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the second.
WSSU produced three hits and two runs in the bottom of the second, including a 2-RBI double from Jada Johnson. Fayetteville State tied the game 2-2 with a run scored in the top of the third. Junior right fielder Shae Barnes (Gibson, NC) reached first base off an error at first. Sophomore utility Zoe Howard (Hampstead, NC) smacked a single to center, which allowed Barnes to score.
The Lady Rams managed to grab a 4-2 advantage with a run scored in the fourth and sixth innings.
Freshman catcher Vanessa Kokoszka (Sanford, NC) opened up the seventh a homerun. Unfortunately, the next three batters were forced out giving WSSU a 4-3 win.
Freshman pitcher Carley Green (Fayetteville, NC) was charged with the loss. She allowed nine hits and four runs with a walk and a strikeout.
Fayetteville State rebounded in game two with an 8-0 shut-out win, which ended in the sixth inning due to the NCAA eight-run rule.
Freshman left fielder Maggie Smith (Fayetteville, NC) had 4-RBIs, two hits, and a run scored off three at-bats. Wickham produced four hits, 2-RBIs, and a run scored off four at-bats. Goins contributed with 2-RBIs, two hits, and two runs scored with three at-bats. Smith and Goins both homered in the fifth inning.
Howard picked up her first shut-out win of the season with four strikeouts, three walks, and only five hits allowed.
Fayetteville State returns to action on Wednesday, April 1st against the University of Mount Olive. First pitch in this non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. from Leonard Sanders Field at Seabrook Park.
