Fayetteville, NC - The Fayetteville State University women's softball team earned a dominating 8-0 victory in game one against Bluefield State College, but dropped game two 2-1 on Monday, March 16th at the Leonard R. Sanders Field at Seabrook Park. FSU improves to 4-2, while the Lady Blues move to 3-5 in the overall standings.
In game one, freshman pitcher Carley Green (Fayetteville, NC) threw a shutout and only allowed three hits in 21 at-bats. Sophomore Zoe Howard (Hampstead, NC) gave FSU an early lead with a 3-RBI double in the second inning.
The Lady Broncos closed out game one in the sixth inning. FSU poured in five hits and five runs, including an inside the park homerun by freshman outfielder Maggie Smith (Fayetteville, NC). Bluefield State lost the game 8-0 in the sixth due to the NCAA eight-run rule.
Bluefield State grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first in game two. Rosanne De Vries and Allyson Hatfield scored off errors by the second baseman. The Lady Blues did not score any additional runs for the remainder of the contest.
Green smacked a single up center field for a RBI in the bottom of the fourth. With bases loaded, Howard crossed home plate from third. The Lady Broncos trailed 2-1 until the conclusion of the contest.
Howard pitched three innings and allowed two runs and two hits with two strikeouts. Green played the relief role with no runs or hits allowed and three strikeouts in four innings pitched.
Fayetteville State heads to Raleigh, NC for the CIAA Roundup hosted by Shaw University at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex. FSU will face teams from the Northern Division starting with Bowie State on Friday, March 20th at 2:00 p.m.
