FSU SOFTBALL TAKES 2 OF 3 WEEKEND GAMES

March 25, 2014

Final Stats

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Fayetteville State University softball team won two of its three weekend CIAA games in Raleigh, N.C. on March 22 and 23.

The Lady Broncos started the weekend off with a 21-1 win against Lincoln (PA), then followed on Saturday with a 7-3 victory over Bowie State before dropping an 8-0 decision against Virginia Union. Those results improve FSU's mark to 3-12 on the season and 3-3 in CIAA play.

In Game One, the Lady Broncos got a 10-spot in the first inning en route to coasting to the win against Lincoln. Eleven different FSU players crossed the plate. Seven scored more than once and Daniqua Taylor (Currie, N.C.), Jessica Randolph (Pinetops, N.C.) and Rebekah Reep(Fayetteville, N.C.) scored three times apiece.

Sierra Henderson-Holmes (Olivia, N.C.) collected a double and Taylor stole a base. Kyrin Walker (Carthage, N.C.) started in the circle and threw three innings. She struck out four hitters, walked none and surrendered just one hit. Skyler Peebles(Raleigh, N.C.) pitched the last two frames, surrendering a run on four hits while striking out one and walking one.

FSU followed the 10-run first with a seven-spot in the second and two runs in both the third and fourth innings.

In Game Two, the Lady Broncos once again started strong. This time, the opponent was Bowie State. FSU surrendered a run in the first, but scored five over the next two innings to take the lead and create a legitimate margin.

Henderson-Holmes was responsible for three of FSU's 13 hits. Brittany Freeman (Fayetteville, N.C.), Zoe Howard (Hampstead, N.C.) and Alex Wickham(Fayetteville, N.C.) each had two hits.

Rebecca Polaschek(Fayetteville, N.C.) and Howard split time in the circle. Polaschek started, giving up seven hits and two runs in 5 1/3 innings. She struck out three and walked two. Howard pitched the final five outs, giving up a hit and a run and striking out two.

FSU scored both of its second-inning runs on a two-out, two-run single from Howard. That plated Haley Wood(Spring Hope, N.C.), who reached on an error and stole second base, and Reep, who walked.

The Lady Broncos scored three more in the third. Freeman led off the frame with a double. Wickham singled her to third and both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. Henderson-Holmes doubled Wickham home. Henderson-Holmes crossed the plate on an error later in the inning.

Bowie State tallied a fourth-inning run, but FSU responded with two more in the fifth. Reep drove Wood home with a two-out single to second after Henderson-Holmes scored on an error by the Bowie State second baseman. Bowie State scored one more run in the seventh, but couldn't get any closer.

Virginia Union proved too tough for Fayetteville State in Game Three. The Panthers scored two runs in each of the first two innings to build enough cushion to last the rest of the way. They then scored four in the fifth to walk off with a five-inning victory. Wickham had a team-high two of the team's six hits.

Howard started the game, surrendering four runs and five hits while striking out two in two innings of work. Walked pitched the last 2 2/3 innings, giving up four runs and four hits while striking out three.

FSU is back in action on Thursday with a doubleheader at Barton College beginning at 2 p.m.
