LADY BRONCOS THUMP ECSU 11-1 FOR FIRST WIN

March 10, 2014

Final Stats

ETTRICK, VA - The Fayetteville State softball team got all of its frustrations out in an 11-1, five-inning victory against Elizabeth City State at Virginia State University on Sunday.

Weather pushed the game back an extra day, but the wait wasn't a problem for the Lady Broncos' bats. FSU (1-9) used 10 hits to scratch across its 11 runs. A seven-run third inning gave FSU a big enough cushion to win the game in five innings.

After Rebecca Polaschek (Fayetteville, NC) shut down the Vikings in the top of the first, the Lady Broncos gave her some run support in the bottom half of the frame. Daniqua Taylor (Currie, NC) and Haley Wood (Spring Hope, NC) walked leading off the inning. Alex Wickham (Fayetteville, NC) then doubled both runners home. Zoe Howard (Hampstead, NC) followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0. Howard eventually reached second but was stranded there to end the inning.

ECSU scratched a run across in the second to claw to within 3-1. But the third inning proved to be the Vikings' undoing.

Wickham, Howard and Sierra Henderson-Holmes (Olivia, NC) each recorded hits to start things off. Henderson-Holmes's double drove in Wickham and Howard to make it 5-1. After an Erica Rodriguez (Charlotte, NC) fly out and a Rebekah Reep (Fayetteville, NC) fielder's choice created a two-out, runner on first situation, FSU responded. Brittany Freeman (Fayetteville, NC), Lashanda Washington (Hope Mills, NC), Taylor and Wood recorded hits. Wickham walked and Wood scored on a wild pitch to make it 10-1.

The Lady Broncos added one more in the fourth inning when Henderson-Holmes scored from second on a groundout off Reep's bat.

Eight of the nine FSU hitters had at least one hit. Six different Lady Broncos had at least one RBI. Taylor, Wood, Wickham and Henderson-Holmes each drove in two runs. Wickham and Howard had two hits apiece.

Polaschek pitched a complete game, allowing nine hits and just the one run in five innings of work. She had no walks or strikeouts.
