FSU SOFTBALL SPLITS ON FIRST DAY OF CIAA ROUND-UP

MURFREESBORO, NC - The Fayetteville State softball team opened conference play on Saturday afternoon by splitting two games against the Chowan Hawks and Elizabeth City State Vikings in a CIAA Round-Up. The Lady Broncos started by falling 8-0 to Chowan in five innings and followed with a 4-0 victory against Elizabeth City State. Sencerae Locklear (So., Fairmont, NC) drove in a team-high three RBI in game two against Elizabeth City State.

The Lady Broncos tallied just four hits in the opener against Chowan as the Hawks scored all of their runs over the course of two innings. Chowan opened with a three-run first inning and added five in the fourth. Four different Fayetteville State players recorded one hit each while Leigh Ward posted three hits for the Hawks.

Spencer Embler (Jr., Thomasville, NC) suffered the loss in game one tossing 4.0 innings and allowed eight runs (five earned) on 12 hits, no walks and two strikeouts. Courtney Groce earned the win after pitching 5.0 scoreless innings while giving up four hits, two walks and three strikeouts.

Kristen Bell (Fr., Hubert, NC) was the story in FSU's 4-0 game two victory over Elizabeth City State. Bell earned her second win of the season after pitching a complete game four-hit shutout against the Vikings while giving up one walk and seven strikeouts. Heather Smith took the loss after pitching just two-thirds of an inning while allowing three runs on one hit, two walks and one strikeout.

The Lady Broncos gave Bell plenty to work with after a three-run bottom of the first was propelled by a two-run single by Locklear with two outs. Maya Washington (Jr., Red Springs, NC) got the scoring started after coming home on a Daniqua Taylor (Jr., Currie, NC) single. Locklear stepped up again with an RBI single in the third to increase Fayetteville State's lead to 4-0.

Locklear finished the game with a team-high two hits and three RBI. Four different Elizabeth City State hitters had one hit apiece.

FSU will wrap up play in the CIAA Round-Up on Sunday, Mar. 10 when it faces Virginia State at 1 p.m.
