LADY BRONCOS SCORE ANOTHER WIN AT CIAA ROUNDUP

March 12, 2012

Final Stats

RALEIGH, N.C. - Tia Caldwell struck out 10 and allowed just three hits as the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos knocked off Elizabeth City State 6-1 on the final day of the CIAA Roundup on Sunday.

The Lady Broncos completed their cross-divisional play with the CIAA's Northern Division with a record of 3-3 after a later 9-1 loss to Virginia Union on Sunday.

The third victory in Fayetteville State's last six games shows significant improvement for a Lady Broncos team that has tested itself with one of the more difficult nonconference schedules in the nation. Fayetteville State (3-22, 3-3), which has played two nationally-ranked teams already this season, added a win over Chowan on Saturday at the roundup, the first victory over the highly-regarded Hawks in FSU school history.

Caldwell (Fr., Newport, N.C.)worked the complete game, walking just one and allowing the lone earned run.

Ashley Wlezen (Jr., Charlotte, N.C.) had two hits and an RBI to pace Fayetteville State at the plate in the victory over Elizabeth City State (1-9, 1-4). Jessica Randolph (So., Pinetops, N.C.) also drove in a run, as did Lashanda Washington (So., Hope Mills, N.C.). Maya Washington (So., Red Springs, N.C.), Sierra Henderson-Holmes (Fr., Olivia, N.C.), Clarissa Pitts (So., Hope Mills, N.C.) and Shaniqua Edwards (Fr., Charlotte, N.C.) each had a hit for Fayetteville State.

On Tuesday, the Lady Broncos begin a grueling week that includes three home doubleheaders. Fayetteville State, which recently concluded the CIAA Roundup with a strong 3-3 mark, hosts Pace for games at 3 and 5 p.m. on Tuesday, then welcomes Mansfield for games at 2 and 4 p.m. on Wednesday before taking on Bloomsburg at 2 and 4 p.m. on Friday. All games will take place at L.R. Saunders Field at Seabrook Park. Fayetteville State will also return to CIAA play when it travels to play Shaw at 1 and 3 p.m. on Sunday.
