Final Stats
FAYETTEVILLE, NC -- Olivia Peavey and Misty Huber didn't throw no-hitters in their starts against Shaw on Friday.
They didn't have to.
Peavey and Huber, who made Fayetteville State history recently by working back-to-back no-hitters in the span of less than a week, were no doubt brilliant in their performances, but the Broncos' bats got into the act as Fayetteville State knocked off the Bears 4-1 and 10-1 for the doubleheader sweep in the Broncos regular season home finale.
As the Broncos (18-25, 11-4, 7-1) celebrated their seniors, April Branch (Sr., Watha, NC), who has led the team in hits, RBI, doubles and home runs over the last four years, collected four hits in the twinbill, with three in the second game that featured her third home run of the season.
Also playing her final home game for the Broncos was fellow senior Demarius Pankey (Laurinburg, NC), who has been a part of more wins (80) than any other player in Broncos' history. She added three hits and two RBI in the second game and had a hit and a run scored in the first game as well.
With the two victories, Fayetteville State won for the seventh time in its last eight games and kept its hopes for a Southern Division championship alive. The Broncos clubbed 13 hits in the second game to win in five innings by the mercy rule, and had nine hits in a Game 1 that didn't feel nearly as close as the final score indicated.
Of course, Peavey had a lot to do with that.
Peavey (So, Siler City, NC) struck out 12 batters in picking up her second straight win -- the third straight time she has fanned 12 or more in a single start. Peavey struck out 17 in a 1-0 loss 10 days ago before whiffing 12 in a no-hitter at Livingstone, and gave up only one unearned run against Shaw, which was limited to just three hits, two from Emily Montgomery.
And Huber (Jr., Orlando, FL) was every bit as a effective as Peavey, winning her third straight start, a run that included a no-hitter on April 6 against St. Augustine's. The CIAA's Pitcher of the Week allowed just one run on four hits while striking out five.
Peavey was also dominant with the bat, adding her third home run of the season with a towering two-run drive to deep center field in the second game. She had belted a two-run double earlier in the game and added two hits and an RBI in Game 1, finishing the doubleheader 4-for-6 with five RBI. Huber also helped her own cause, slapping a two-run single in the second game to end the game by the mercy rule. She had two hits in Game 1 as well. Ashley Wlezen (So., Charlotte, NC) picked up two hits and an RBI in Game 2.
Fayetteville State travels to play Winston-Salem State on Sunday in the regular season finale for both teams. Should Fayetteville State win both games, it would capture its first division crown since 2009. The CIAA Tournament begins on Thursday in Petersburg, VA.
Shaw falls to 13-42 overall and 10-7 in the CIAA.
