Final Stats
FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Chelsea Cobb struck out 10 and allowed just one run on four hits to lead Fairmont State to a doubleheader sweep of the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos in softball at Leonard R. Sanders Field at Seabrook Park on Wednesday.
Nikki Nuzum led the Lady Falcons to a 3-1 win in the first game of the doubleheader, holding the Lady Broncos scoreless after falling behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Nuzum fanned seven and scattered five hits in the complete game victory.
Cobb helped push Fairmont State (5-8) to a 2-1 win in the second game, holding Fayetteville State (10-18) without a hit until Olivia Peavey (So., Siler City, NC) singled with one out in the fourth inning. Cobb also worked the complete game.
Peavey (6-7), the CIAA's Pitcher of the Week, took one of the hard-luck losses, allowing three runs on seven hits while fanning three and walking four. Misty Huber (Jr., Orlando, FL) worked four innings in the second game, allowing only one hit and an unearned run. Huber took the no-decision after Clara Davis (Fr., Naples, Italy) was stuck with the hard-luck loss after three effective innings in which she gave up one run on two hits.
Fayetteville State led the opener 1-0 after a run-scoring single from Peavey, who had three hits on the day. But the Lady Broncos didn't muster much more from then on, and Fairmont State tied the game in the fourth when Abbey Wilson, who had tripled, scored on a groundout by Brittany Tallhamer.
After Nuzum worked out of a second-and-third, two-out jam in the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Falcons scored twice more in the top of the seventh off a Wilson RBI single and Brittany Williams' infield hit to make it 3-1. Nuzum made the lead stand up, stranding a runner at third to end the game.
Cobb was dominant in the second game, though Huber and Davis matched her. Still, Fairmont State took a 1-0 lead on Kayla Gray's groundout in the third. Fayetteville State later tied the game on Tiffany Locklear's (Fr., Maxton, NC) sacrifice fly in the fourth, but the Lady Falcons' Chelsea Simon drove in what proved to be the game-winning run with a triple in the fifth.
Wilson had three hits and two RBI on the day to pace Fairmont State.
Jessica Randolph (Fr., Pinetops, NC) had two hits on the day for Fayetteville State, which hosts Pace University at 3 and 5 p.m. on Thursday.
