RALEIGH, NC - Deuces were wild for Olivia Peavey and the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos on Sunday.
Peavey, FSU's ace, won two games Sunday as the Lady Broncos won twice more on the second day of the CIAA Roundup at Walnut Creek Softball Complex in Raleigh.
Peavey (So., Siler City, NC), who improved to 5-6 on the season, struck out nine in both of her outings in leading the Lady Broncos (10-16, 4-2) to a second straight 2-1 mark in roundup play after an 8-1 win over St. Paul's, a 10-9 loss to Virginia State and an 11-0 5-inning victory over Lincoln (PA).
Peavey allowed just one hit in her second start of the day when she faced just one batter over the minimum against the Lady Tigers, whose Sharay DuBose reached on an infield single in the third inning to collect Lincoln's only hit.
"(Peavey) has so much control over everything she throws that it's just phenomenal," said Fayetteville State coach Miguel "Coach Who" Justiniano. "If she weren't battling a sore arm, she'd really be putting up big numbers."
The Lady Broncos picked up where they left on Saturday night, hitting the field on Sunday morning to knock off St. Paul's 8-1.
The game was tight for much of the contest, though Fayetteville State never trailed. The Lady Broncos led 2-1 through 3 ½ innings, but broke things open with three runs in the fourth inning and three more in the sixth inning.
Peavey was dominant in earning her fourth victory of the season, fanning seven of the first nine batters she faced, including five in a row. She worked four innings, striking out nine and allowing just two hits and one run, which wasn't earned. Misty Huber (Jr., Orlando, FL) worked three effective innings, striking out four and allowing just one hit in earning the save.
Demarius Pankey (Sr., Lauringburg, NC) had two hits in the game and scored two runs while Peavey and April Branch (Sr., Watha, NC) each had a hit and drove in a run.
Fayetteville State lost its middle game of the day, falling 10-9 to Virginia Union. The Lady Broncos were in line for the victory following a tremendous two-run home run by Peavey to give FSU a 9-7 lead after a five-run sixth inning.
But Union's Danielle Brown belted a three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to give the Lady Panthers a one-run lead, which starting pitcher Valeria Cantu made hold up by stranding the tying run at third in the bottom of the seventh.
But Fayetteville State romped past Lincoln in the nightcap, breaking the game open with four runs in the third inning and seven in the fourth. Peavey was 3-for-4 with four RBI while Maya Washington (Jr., Red Springs, NC) had two hits and two RBI and Jessica Randolph (Fr, Pinetops, NC) added two hits and an RBI. Quristeen Brown (Fr., Greensboro, NC) added two hits and scored two runs for the Lady Broncos while Ashley Wlezen (So., Charlotte, NC) and Huber each had a run-scoring hit.
Coach Who said the Lady Broncos came to the first two days of the roundup looking for a 5-1 record after opening play with a 2-1 mark on Saturday, but he is looking forward to the upcoming Southern Division play after a pair of nonconference doubleheaders on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
"We're a little disappointed because we wanted to be 5-1, but we'll take it," said Coach Who. "We'll march on with two nonconference meetings and get ready for Southern Division play. That's what we're looking forward to first - trying to win the Southern Division."
