FSU SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH GOLDEN BULLS

March 24, 2010

Final Stats

CHARLOTTE - Sophomore pitcher Misty Huber (Orlando, FL) had one of her best outings of the season and helped Fayetteville State split a softball doubleheader with Johnson C. Smith on Wednesday.

The Golden Bulls (9-15, 4-2 CIAA) won the first game 4-3 while FSU (12-16, 5-4 CIAA) came out on top, 2-1, in the second game.

The first game saw FSU jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. In the first inning, sophomore April Branch (Pender, NC) doubled to left field, advancing junior infielder Demarius Pankey (Laurinburg, NC) to third.

Two batters later senior pitcher and infielder Tracey Brighter (Spring Lake, NC), playing and pitching in her first game in nearly two weeks, smacked a two-RBI double to left field scoring Pankey and Branch.

Pankey had a RBI single in the second inning that scored Huber and gave FSU a 3-0 lead. JCSU rallied, scoring three runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth to top the Broncos.

Brighter finished the game with six strikeouts in six innings pitched. Sophomore right fielder LaTonia Gatling (Suffolk, VA), Pankey, Brighter and Huber had two hits each to lead FSU.

In the second game, Huber pitched a complete game, struck out six JCSU batters and allowed just one earned run.

Gatling had a game-high three hits while senior Shahiree Covington (Scotland County, NC) and freshman Rita Diaz (Fayetteville, NC) added two hits each.

In the second inning Pankey singled, scoring Covington to give FSU a 1-0 lead. After a Diaz single to center field and a Pankey sacrifice that advanced Diaz to third, Gatling's bunt scored Diaz and gave the Broncos their other run of the game.

JCSU scored its only run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

FSU will close out its home schedule on Friday, when the Broncos host conference-rival Chowan. First pitches are set for 3 and 5 p.m.
