FAYETTEVILLE - Jamel Carpenter scored 27 points and led Fayetteville State to an 80-67 win over Livingstone.
Carpenter, the CIAA's leading scorer, made his first six shots and nailed four 3-pointers in the game.
A native of Salisbury, N.C., Thursday's game was Carpenter's first against his hometown school.
"It was fun because my god brother plays for them," said Carpenter. "It was exciting and I can't wait to go back and play them next week."
Ariel Robinson hit three 3-pointers also and finished with 10 points. Jason Thompson was perfect from the free throw line en route to 10 points. Senior Davon Hood added six points and a game-high 10 rebounds for the Broncos (6-12, 3-9 CIAA, 1-2 Western Division).
FSU has won five of its last eight meetings against the Blue Bears, dating back to the 2006-07 season.
"The same story for me is trying to improve," said head coach Alphonza Kee. "Overall, win, lose or draw we have some things to improve on. But it's definitely good to get a win in the win column. These guys did a great job."
Still, Robinson and Carpenter believe that, despite the win, FSU can play better.
"We're better than this," Robinson said. "Coach knows we're better and we know we're better. We're going to keep striving for greatness. That's what coach expects from us and what we expect from each other, so that's what we're going to do."
Added Carpenter: "It's February and it's time to turn it up. We're trying to get this thing rolling as we head into Western Division play and into the CIAA tournament."
