Final Stats
FAYETTEVILLE - Despite three hits by rightfielder LaTonia Gatling, Fayetteville State dropped both games, 6-4 and 2-1, of a doubleheader with Concord on Sunday.
FSU (3-5) trailed 4-1 heading into the bottom of fifth inning of the first game, before Gatling singled to left field.
After Gatling stole second base, first baseman April Branch hit a RBI triple to score Gatling. Branch would eventually cross home plate also, making the score 4-3 in the top of the sixth inning.
Unfortunately, the Broncos weren't able to hold the lead after allowing two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Misty Huber (0-2) gave up nine hits and struck out three batters in seven innings of work. Branch walked twice and scored two of the Broncos' three runs.
In the second game, FSU's Tracey Brighter (3-3) had season-high 17 strikeouts and and allowed only three hits.
Still, the Broncos' pitcher got the loss after FSU managed just five hits and left six on base.
Brighter tallied two of the Broncos' five hits while Gatling had a hit and a run. Leftfielder Ashley Vann scored FSU's only run.
Concord's Tamara Smith allowed one earned run, five hits and struck out five in seven innings to earn the win.
FSU opens up conference play on March 2 when it hosts Western-Division rival Chowan. First pitches are set for 3 and 5 p.m.
