FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Tracy Brighter had 15 combined strikeouts and went 2-0 as Fayetteville State swept a doubleheader from Bluefield State 7-6 and 3-1 in Seabrook Park.
The Broncos (2-2 overall) won the first game thanks, largely, to Brighter and first baseman April Branch.
In relief of starting pitcher Misty Huber, Brighter pitched the final three innings allowing just one run and striking out six.
With the score tied 6-6 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Branch belted a Kari Chaffin pitch to left field, allowing Brighter to score the game-winning run. Branch and shortstop Demarius Pankey combined for four hits and drove in four of the Broncos' runs.
After four innings, FSU led by as much as 5-1.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Lady Blues took advantage of two hits and three errors to score four runs and tie the game. The Lady Blues went ahead by one in the sixth inning.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Lugenia Beatty reached base on a fielder's choice. Huber knocked a double into right-center to help setup the tying run. LaTonia Gatling jammed up the second baseman with a hit which and forced a throwing error.
The play allowed Beatty to cross home for the tie and send the game into an extra inning.
In the second game, Brighter allowed only three runs and one hit en route to a 3-1 FSU win. Pankey, Huber and Beatty had RBI in FSU's win.
With two outs and two runners on base in the second inning, Huber singled to left field which brought home the first score of the game.
The Lady Blues responded with a run of their own in the third, but Pankey's double to left-center gave the Broncos a one run lead. In the fourth inning, Brighter hit a single and advanced to second on a passed ball.
Beatty followed with a single to left center which brough Brighter home for the final score of the game.
FSU's scheduled doubleheader with St. Andrews on Monday evening has been postponed due to the threat of rain.
The Broncos return to Seabrook Park on Feb. 21 with a doubleheader against Concord. First pitches are set for 2 and 4 p.m.
