Final Stats
After one of its poorest performances of the season, Fayetteville State responded just how head coach Alphonza Kee wanted.
The Broncos (7-14, 4-11 CIAA, 2-4 Western Division) shot 52.1 percent from the field and snapped a two-game losing streak with a 70-60 win over Shaw on Thursday.
"I knew we would respond," Kee said. "We're a team of toughness, integrity and passion. All of our games you saw toughness, so that's why I was disappointed against Chowan. But I knew they'd come back."
Only two Broncos scored in double figures, but 11 of FSU's 12 players had at least one field goal.
"This is a big win for us," said sophomore guard Jarmel Baxter who scored 11 points. "We've known we can do it all year. Tonight we took our time - we just had to come together as a team."
Jamel Carpenter, the CIAA's leading scorer, led FSU with 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field.
Jason Thompson had seven points while junior Ben Davis, freshman Seth Hawkins and senior Davon Hood had six each. Thompson, senior Larry Ross and Ariel Robinson had team-highs with five rebounds apiece.
"This is a big confidence booster going into Saturday's game," Carpenter said. "If we can play a little smarter going into Saturday we should be fine."
FSU led 29-23 at halftime and by as much as 12 in the second half.
Thursday's game was the fourth of five-straight contests inside Capel Arena for FSU. The Broncos host Johnson C. Smith on Saturday. The game on will begin at 5 p.m. and be televised nationally by the Urban Sports & Entertainment group.
Kee wants as many fans as possible to pack Capel Arena.
"We have a really good product on the court," he said. "The crowd makes a difference and is a huge advantage for us. They make our team a little bit better."
For many Broncos, Saturday's game will be their first time playing in front of a national audience. When asked what he expects from the experience, Carpenter responded succinctly.
"I'm excited," he said.
Raheem Smith led Shaw (12-11, 9-7, 2-4) with 18 points. Rodney Callwood added 13 points and nine rebounds.
