FAYETTEVILLE - Despite a double-double from junior Jamel Carpenter, the Fayetteville State men's basketball team fell to Elizabeth City State, 80-57, inside Capel Arena on Saturday.
Carpenter scored 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in the loss. Junior forward Ben Davis was the only other Bronco player in double figures with 10 points.
ECSU (6-4, 2-3 CIAA) was led by Blake Price, Quintin Spady and Paul Goldsmith. The trio combined for 56 of the Vikings' points.
"Coach Walker has been at ECSU for a while and his system has been planted," first-year head coach Alphonza Kee said. "You saw it out there. They did a good job executing and we didn't do as well. The credit goes to them, they're a veteran CIAA team and came in here and won."
The Broncos (3-6, 0-4 CIAA) are playing only their second game since seniors Jason Thompson, Davon Hood and Larry Ross joined the squad in the middle of December.
Kee said his team is still adjusting to its new roster.
"As hard as our guys are working, they've been out for about five months," Kee said. "We're disjointed and very, very poor as far as continuity. We've got to find and become a unit. We've got to get better."
ECSU shot 49. 2 percent from the field while limiting FSU to 1-of-17 shooting from 3-point range.
"We've got to get better execution and I've been consistent in saying it's a process," Kee said. "By us not executing our offense, our shots aren't in rhythm and the right guys aren't taking them all the time and we're not open. Anytime you have a hiccup in execution, we're off and you saw that when the shots weren't going in."
Hood had six points and six rebounds for FSU while freshman guard Andre Best added five points and two steals.
Kee and the Broncos host St. Paul's Monday at 7:30 p.m. inside Capel Arena.
