Fayetteville, NC - The Lady Broncos defeated Bluefield State 8-0 and 11-5 in double-header softball action. Fayetteville State, 2-6 overall, hosted the Big Blues in Seabrook Park on the Leonard R. Saunders field in soggy conditions. In the first game, Fayetteville State racked up 12 hits in 29 at bats and limited it errors to two. Alicia Frank (Sophia, NC - 1-1 overall) pitched to 21 batters in the first game and allowed only one hit. April Branch (Pender, NC) recorded two RBIs from three hits. The Big Blues made the second more competitive with a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. FSU took advantage of three errors and five hits to score eight runs to win the game in seven innings. Rakhee Smith (Hope Mills, NC) hit her second home run of the season while Branch recorded five RBIs from two hits.
Fayetteville State dominated the first game against the Big Blues. Frank allowed one hit in the fourth inning but struck three batters while walking one. She batted four hits with two runners scoring. Frank and Kimera Seward-Coburn (Champaign, IL) hit doubles while Branch hit two doubles. As the first baseman, Branch had six putouts with the help of Smith who had three assists.
Kristen Britt (Delco, NC) won her first game of the season from the pitching mound (1-5). In seven innings, Britt faced 36 batters and struck out six. Two were walked and one reached on her error. The others had 12 hits for five runs. The game turning inning for the Lady Broncos was the fifth inning. Rakhee Smith reached on base by the right fielder's error which allowed Alicia Frank to score and tie the game at 4-4 with one out. Britt then reached by error of the third baseman and allowed two runners to up the score 7-4. At the plate, with two outs, Briana Montgomery (Fort Hood, CA) singled for an RBI. With all of the bases loaded, Branch hit the ball towards centerfield where the defense committed an error and allowed three runners to cross home plate. Frank brought in the eighth run of the inning when she singled down the left line that bought Branch across the plate. The inning closed with eight runs, five hits, three errors, and three left on base.
