Final Stats
Fayetteville, NC - Fayetteville State (0-2 overall) opened the 2009 season by hosting incoming CIAA opponent Chowan University on Leonard R Saunders Field in Seabrook Park. The Hawks (5-1 overall) displayed its experience on the field by running away with the first game of the double-header 9-1. Fayetteville State got into the swing of things in the second matchup but to no avail; Chowan held on to win 10-8. April Branch (sophomore - Pender, NC) popped a homerun over the centerfield fence for a 3-RBI at bat. Rakhee Smith (sophomore - Hope Mills, NC), who followed Branch in the lineup, also nailed a homer over the centerfield fence.
Chowan dominated the first game with 11 hits and nine runs. Shellie Wimpey (2-1 overall) faced 23 batters and threw six strikeouts. The Lady Broncos committed two errors and could only manage five hits and one run. The run was in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Fayetteville State found some rhythm in the second game. The Lady Broncos was down by one (3-4) after the first inning. Both team scored one run later in the fourth inning - FSU 4 CU 5. The Hawks took advantage of three FSU errors and connected on three hits to bring five runs in. n the bottom of the fifth inning, LaTonia Gatling (freshman - Suffolk, VA) reached first base on balls. Ashae Covington (freshman - Whiteville, NC) was called in to pinch hit for the pitcher Kristen Britt (freshman - Delco, NC). Covington singled to the pitcher while Gatling advanced to third base. Branched stepped to plate and hit a clean shot over the fence to drop the score to 10-7. Smith was next at bat and also sent the yellow ball clearly over the fence. The next three batters grounded out in the infield to end the rally at 10-8. Both teams defense improved to end the game at the bottom of the seventh inning.
Fayetteville State will travel to Pfeiffer University on February 10th for a 1:30 and 3:30 double-header.
