Raleigh, NC - The Lady Broncos softball team picked up two conference wins against Shaw University on Monday afternoon from the Walnut Creek Softball Complex. Fayetteville State earned an 11-4 win in game one and blanked the Lady Bears 21-0 in game two.
Shaw jumped out to an early lead when they scored three runs in the first inning. FSU put their first points on the board in the top of the second. Junior Dominique Mills grounded out to second base, which allowed senior Shatia Gidrey to score from third. Sophomore DeOndra Peterson and senior Aja Sawyer both collected a RBI with a single to bring home runners on third.
By the close of the second, FSU was ahead by a score of 4-3 going into the third inning. The Lady Broncos had a huge third inning, scoring seven runs off three hits. No additional runs were scored in the contest until the bottom of the fifth. Marquita Pittman crossed home plate off a ground out to the shortstop by Darnetra Williams. The RBI by Williams would be Shaw's only run of the inning thus ending the game via the NCAA run rule.
In the second contest, Fayetteville State pounced on Shaw early and never looked back. FSU had seven runners crossed home plate in the first inning. The Lady Broncos held Shaw scoreless and added at least one run in every inning as they went on to a 21-0 victory.
As a team, Fayetteville State had 19 RBIs off 16 hits in game two. Freshman pitcher Alicia Frank is credited for both Lady Bronco wins, moving her record to 11-11 for the season. Frank faced 18 batters, had three strikeouts, and only gave up three hits in game two.
Sophomore Danisha Lyons had a solid performance for the Lady Broncos in the second game of the doubleheader. Lyons rattled off two hits, two runs scored, and five RBIs in her four at-bats. Freshman Rahkee Smith was another big contributor with four hits, four runs scored, and three RBIs in her four at-bats.
FSU improves to 11-11 overall and 8-2 in the CIAA. The Lady Broncos will not have much time to rest or far to travel as they face the Lady Falcons of Saint Augustine's College on Tuesday, March 8th in Raleigh, NC. The first pitch in this conference doubleheader is scheduled for 1 pm from the Walnut Creek Softball Complex.
