Final Stats
Fayetteville, NC - The Lady Broncos softball team swept Virginia Union University in a conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at the Leonard R. Sanders Athletic Field (Seabrook Park). FSU shutout the Lady Panthers 8-0 in game one and earned a 12-4 victory in game two.
Game #1 - Virginia Union 0, Fayetteville State 8 (six innings)
FSU scored the first run in game one. Freshman shortstop Rahkee Smith smashed a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing the runner on third to come home. Junior Dominique Mills scored the run and had the only hit in the first inning.
The scoreboard remained at 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth. In the inning, Fayetteville State broke loose and scored five runs off two hits. Senior Shatia Gidrey sent a shot to right center for a three RBI triple to create some cushion for the Lady Broncos' lead.
Mills hit a RBI single to left field in the bottom of the sixth to score sophomore Donieca Ebron. Mills stole second base and advance to third on an error by the third baseman. When up to bat, Smith reached first off an error by the right outfielder and was credited with the RBI as Mills scored the final run.
With the score 8-0, the game was called in the sixth via the NCAA run rule. Freshman pitcher Alicia Frank was earned the win and improved to 15-13 this season.
Game #2 - Virginia Union 4, Fayetteville State 12 (five innings)
Virginia Union had four runs scored in the first inning of game two. Despite having the lead early, the Lady Panthers would not score another run in the contest. Fayetteville State's comeback was sparked after senior Aja Sawyer was batted in by Gidrey in the bottom second.
Down 4-1 going into the third, FSU exploded for four runs off four hits in the bottom of the third. The Lady Broncos would not relinquish the lead, but they would add to it. As a team, Fayetteville State had five RBIs, five runs, and three hits in the fourth inning.
The Lady Panthers trailed 10-4 at the start of the fifth inning. With the score still the same at the bottom of the inning, FSU could end the game early with two runs. Sophomore Bobbi Boucher was on third when Mills hit a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing Boucher home for the score.
Freshman Rakietta Williams drilled a RBI single to first base, scoring sophomore Danisha Lyons from third for the final run. The Lady Broncos had 12 hits in game two before the game was called again due to the NCAA run rule.
With the two wins, Fayetteville State improves to 16-14 overall and 13-3 in the CIAA this season. The Lady Broncos will play their last regular season competition at home against the Lady Blue Bears of Livingstone College on Monday, April 14th. Game one of the doubleheader is set to begin at 1 pm from the Leonard R. Sanders Athletic Field (Seabrook Park).
