Elizabeth City, NC - The Lady Broncos swept Elizabeth City State University in a CIAA softball doubleheader from Viking Field Thursday afternoon. Fayetteville State took the first game 11-0 in five innings, followed by an 18-3 win in the second game. FSU improves to 7-9 overall and 4-0 in the CIAA. Elizabeth City's record falls to 2-9 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
Game #1 Fayetteville State 11, Elizabeth City State 0 (5 innings)
Fayetteville exploded in the first inning of game one with seven runs off four hits. Freshman third baseman Demarius Pankey delivered two RBIs with a double to left field to open up the scoring. Sophomore Bobbi Boucher belted a three-run homer, which scored sophomore Danisha Lyons and senior Shatia Gidrey.
The Lady Broncos scored three runs in the second inning and were up 11-0 by the top of the fourth inning. After holding the Lady Vikings scoreless throughout five innings, the game came to a close via the NCAA run rule.
Freshman pitcher Alicia Frank only gave up two hits and earned her sixth victory of the season. Freshman shortstop Rahkee Smith and Pankey each had three RBIs and one hit in the Lady Broncos game one win.
Game #2 Fayetteville State 18, Elizabeth City State 3 (6 innings)
The second game remained scoreless until the second inning. The Lady Broncos got on the board first when Danisha Lyons singled and advanced to second, scoring three runners. Lyons crossed home plate later in the inning off an error by the second baseman. FSU closed out the inning with four runs and two hits.
Fayetteville State had a monster 12-run inning in the sixth to essentially earn them the victory in the ball game. Shatia Gidrey and Lyons both tallied four RBIs; while senior Aja Sawyer, Bobbi Boucher, and Demarius Pankey had two RBIs apiece in the contest.
Alicia Frank collected her seventh win overall and third victory facing CIAA competition.
The Lady Broncos return to action Saturday March 29th when they travel to Ettrick, VA to face the Lady Trojans of Virginia State University. First pitch of the doubleheader is schedule for 1 pm.
