LADY BRONCOS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER WITH NC WESLEYAN

Rocky Mount, NC - The Lady Broncos softball team split their doubleheader with North Carolina Wesleyan College Wednesday afternoon at Edge Field. Fayetteville State let game one slip away 5-0, but recovered in game two with a 12-9 victory over the Battling Bishops.

In the opener, freshman pitcher Alicia Frank did not give up any runs or hits in the first three innings. Unfortunately, the Lady Broncos were only able to produce one hit each inning going into the fourth. Wesleyan broke the scoreless tie when shortstop Ashlee Bass delivered an inside-the-park homerun in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman

Freshman shortstop Rahkee Smith, sophomore DeOndra Peterson, and junior centerfielder Dominique Mills all hit singles in the top of the fifth. None of the Lady Broncos crossed home plate in the inning. Bass smashed her second homer of the day in the bottom of the fifth, a three-run shot over the fence in left-center that gave the Bishops a 4-0 lead. Outfielder Whitney Moshier tacked on the Bishops last run with an RBI-triple in the sixth for the 5-0 final.

In game two, the Lady Broncos jumped out with an early 1-0 lead off a RBI-single to left field from Frank. Whitney Moshier was walked to get on base and eventually scored Wesleyan's only run of the inning to tie the score. The Battling Bishops took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second.

FSU regained the lead in the third when the Lady Broncos tallied four hits to score three runs. Frank recorded another RBI, while sophomore Danisha Lyons nailed a two-run single to left with two outs, giving Fayetteville State a 4-3 advantage.

Wesleyan continued the back-and-forth battle with three runs in the bottom of the third to go up 6-4. The Lady Broncos climbed on top again with a six-run fourth inning, off just two hits. NCWC trailed 10-6 heading into the bottom of the fifth. Moshier pulled the Bishops within one with a three-run homer in the inning.

The Lady Broncos did not allow NCWC to get any closer, adding two runs in the sixth for a 12-9 final. Fayetteville State delivered Wesleyan its first loss of the season with the game two victory. The Battling Bishops are now 5-1 this season, while FSU improves to 3-5 overall.

Alicia Frank finished 3-for-3 with six RBIs for Fayetteville State. Frank earned the win in the relief for the Lady Broncos.

FSU faces their first conference action of the season when they travel Lawrenceville, VA for a doubleheader with the Lady Tigers of St. Paul's College. The first game is set to begin at 1 pm.
