Sophomore right side hitter Amori Johnson brings a combination of athletic ability, leadership, and academic excellence to the Fayetteville State University women's volleyball program. A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Johnson has developed into a versatile competitor whose passion for volleyball is matched by her commitment to personal growth and success in the classroom.
Before arriving at Fayetteville State, Johnson enjoyed an outstanding career at Westlake High School, where she was a three-year varsity starter and served as team captain during her senior season. She earned First Team All-Region honors and was named Most Valuable Player in both her junior and senior years. Johnson concluded her high school career with more than 500 kills and 100 digs, helping lead her team to a state playoff appearance.
Her accomplishments extended beyond athletics. Johnson demonstrated exceptional creativity and technical skill by earning first place in Drafting and Design for three consecutive years, showcasing the same dedication to excellence that has defined her athletic career.
Since joining the Broncos, Johnson has continued to excel. She earned CIAA Rookie of the Week honors, was recognized on the Academic Honor Wall, posted a 3.0 GPA during the spring semester, and helped the volleyball program achieve a collective 3.36 team GPA.
Johnson chose Fayetteville State because of the opportunity to grow academically and athletically in a supportive environment.
"From the beginning, I felt welcomed by the coaches and the university community, and I knew it was an environment where I could continue to grow as both a student and an athlete."
She believes Fayetteville State provides the ideal balance between athletic competition and academic achievement.
"Being a Bronco means more than just competing. It means representing a family, a tradition, and a culture of excellence."
One of Johnson's greatest strengths is her mindset. Before every competition, she relies on positive affirmations and confidence built through preparation.
"I remind myself, 'I am enough, and I can do this.' That helps me block out self-doubt and trust the work I've put in."
She approaches every match focused on staying present, trusting her training, and competing one point at a time. Her motivation comes from remembering her love for volleyball, the sacrifices that brought her to this level, and the support she receives from family, coaches, and teammates.
The person who has influenced her athletic journey the most is her mother, Schelaundria Dorsey.
"She has always believed in me, encouraged me to keep going, and supported me through every stage of my athletic journey. Her strength and sacrifices inspire me every day."
Away from volleyball, Johnson enjoys reading personal development books, spending time in the gym, creating content for social media, listening to music, and growing in her faith through Bible study and reflection. She values opportunities to challenge herself, learn new skills, and continue developing both personally and professionally.
Academically, Johnson is pursuing a degree in Computer Science and has ambitious plans for the future. She hopes to earn degrees in both Computer Science and Civil Engineering before continuing her education at the graduate level. Long term, she plans to establish a volleyball training organization that provides club volleyball and skill development opportunities for young athletes, with the vision of expanding nationally and eventually worldwide.
For Johnson, volleyball is about more than competition. It is an opportunity to inspire others, create opportunities for future generations, and represent Fayetteville State with pride.
Career Goals
Earn degrees in Computer Science and Civil Engineering, pursue a master's degree, and build a volleyball training organization that helps young athletes develop on and off the court.
