Jarmel Baxter is entering his second season as an assistant coach for the Fayetteville State men's basketball team under the leadership of head coach Ken Spencer. In his role as assistant coach, Baxter will assist with recruiting, scheduling and player skill development.
Baxter, a native of Davidson, NC, came to the Broncos program from North Mecklenburg High School and played three seasons for Fayetteville State at the guard position. He played in 80 games and started in 52 throughout his career.
Baxter was a commendable leader at FSU both on and off the court. He earned his bachelor's degree in Sociology in 2012 and returned to his alma mater to obtain his master's in Social Work in 2015.
He started in a career-high 22 games during the 2010-11 season, in which he averaged eight points per game. Baxter scored a career-high 25 points that season against St. Andrews. As a sophomore during the 2009-10 season, he played in 25 games with 20 starts and averaged a career-best 8.3 points per game.
Baxter finished up his career at Fayetteville State in 2011-12 averaging 6.3 points per game in 27 games played and 10 starts. For his career, Baxter averaged 7.5 points per game while shooting 34 percent from the field and 33 percent from behind the three-point line.
After his playing career, Baxter served as a graduate assistant coach for the men's basketball team for three seasons under former head coach Alphonza Kee (2012-15). Following his tenure on Kee's staff, Baxter served as the secondary assistant coach at North Mecklenburg High; helping the varsity boys' team go undefeated in their conference. He has also worked with Davidson College and Virginia State University in facilitating summer skills camps for young male athletes. Baxter hosted his first youth basketball camp in Wilmington, NC (June 2016) that focused on basketball fundamentals and team building.
"I truly give God all the glory," stated Baxter. "I'm honored to be given this opportunity to work for the same program that I once played for. I look forward to helping our student-athletes become victorious and collaborating with the Bronco staff in an effort to continue the legacy of success here at my alma mater. In most importantly getting student-athletes to graduate, and develop young men into more mature, well-rounded men".
In addition to his coaching duties, Baxter serves as the assistant coordinator for intramurals at FSU.
