Biography

Junior right-side/outside hitter Kyla Powell brings versatility, experience, and a competitive mindset to the Fayetteville State volleyball program. A native of Oakley, California, Powell transferred to Fayetteville State after previously attending Alcorn State. She is pursuing a degree in Psychology and expects to graduate in 2028.

Powell attended Freedom High School, where she established herself as a multi-sport athlete. In addition to volleyball, she competed in flag football, track, and softball. Her performance on the volleyball court earned her First Team All-Conference honors, setting the foundation for her collegiate career.

At the collegiate level, Powell continued to distinguish herself, earning First Team All-Conference recognition while competing at the junior college level. One of her favorite athletic experiences was competing in the California junior college state tournament, an opportunity that allowed her to perform on a championship stage.

Powell's journey has also included challenges that have helped shape her as an athlete. She identifies navigating the transfer portal as one of the biggest obstacles she has faced, an experience that ultimately led her to Fayetteville State. Powell was drawn to FSU because of its competitive culture and tight-knit community, and she values the support the university provides its student-athletes both on and off the court.

Before competition, Powell finds a moment of focus through her faith, saying a prayer during the national anthem. She credits her father, Clifton, and her oldest brother as the biggest athletic influences in her life, pointing to their guidance and support throughout her journey.
One of Powell's most memorable volleyball moments came at the conclusion of her club career when she scored the final point in a championship match. The moment remains a special reminder of the work, experiences, and relationships that have shaped her love for the game.

Away from volleyball, Powell enjoys fishing, camping, paddle boarding, and cooking. Her ambitions extend well beyond athletics. After completing her undergraduate degree, she plans to pursue an MBA and hopes to make a meaningful impact by helping provide housing for young people who age out of the foster care system.

As a member of the Broncos volleyball program, Powell looks to continue growing as a student-athlete while contributing to Fayetteville State's competitive culture and close-knit community.
