Casey "CJ" Johnson III is a determined and physical running back who brings resilience, experience, and a team-first mentality to the Fayetteville State football program. A native of Little Rock, Arkansas, Johnson arrived at FSU after competing at Independence Community College and has embraced the opportunity to continue his career at one of the nation's premier HBCU football programs.
Before beginning his collegiate career, Johnson starred at Benton High School, where he earned All-State and All-Conference honors while also receiving the prestigious 6-Man Award. In addition to football, he competed in track and field, showcasing the athleticism that has helped him excel on the gridiron.
Johnson's football journey has been defined by perseverance and overcoming adversity. One of his favorite athletic memories was helping his high school team reach the state championship level while proving doubters wrong along the way. He considers simply beating the odds and continuing to pursue his dreams among his greatest accomplishments.
At Fayetteville State, Johnson is pursuing a degree in Sports Management and plans to remain involved in athletics long after his playing career ends. His goal is to continue playing football professionally for as long as possible before transitioning into coaching, where he hopes to impact future generations of student-athletes.
Johnson credits his cousin, T.J. Hammonds, as his biggest athletic influence and draws daily motivation from his family, particularly his younger brother Harlem, his parents, and the loved ones he has lost. Before every game, he follows a personal routine that includes prayer, beating his chest once, and pointing to the sky in honor of those watching over him.
Known for his work ethic, Johnson prepares mentally for competition by keeping his head down and focusing on the task at hand. One of the biggest challenges he has faced as an athlete has been adding and maintaining weight while continuing to perform at a high level.
Johnson chose Fayetteville State because of the genuine connection he felt with the coaching staff, particularly Head Coach Richard Hayes Jr., and the opportunity to experience HBCU football. He appreciates the resources available to student-athletes and believes FSU has helped him mature into a more respectful and responsible young man.
Among his most memorable moments in football is scoring a touchdown and experiencing the excitement that comes with making an impact for his team. His advice to younger athletes is straightforward: "Keep going. Don't worry about what people say you can't do. You can beat the odds."
As he enters his senior season, Johnson looks to make a significant contribution to the Broncos' offense while continuing to represent Fayetteville State with determination, humility, and pride.
