FAYETTEVILLE, NC -- Fayetteville State University's volleyball team opened its home schedule in dominant fashion Tuesday evening, sweeping Clinton College in straight sets at Felton J. Capel Arena. The Broncos won by scores of 25-16, 25-13, 25-14, improving to 4-3 overall on the season.
Senior outside hitter Symone Morris led all players with 13 kills and a .545 hitting percentage, while Jasmine Culp anchored the defense with a match-high 15 digs. Setter Giovanna Teixeira paced the offense with 16 assists, and Chiara Vittoni added a match-high three service aces to round out a balanced team effort.
For Clinton College, Amoni Washington led the Bears with eight kills and a .357 hitting percentage, while Ashlyn Knight contributed nine assists. Monica Burns, Camille Newton, and Maria Colon each recorded two service aces, and Doris Rodrigo led the team at the net with one block.
Fayetteville State came out strong in the opening set, hitting .464 with 15 kills to take a 25-16 win. The Broncos built a commanding 22-10 lead before closing out the set.
In the second frame, FSU never trailed after taking a 3-2 lead early. The Broncos extended their advantage to 22-8 and finished with another 15 kills and four service aces to win 25-13.
The third set followed a similar script, with Fayetteville State jumping ahead 20-8 behind a .308 hitting percentage and 11 kills. The Broncos sealed the sweep with a 25-14 victory, adding three more aces in the final frame.
Fayetteville State will return to Felton J. Capel Arena on Thursday, Sept. 25, to open CIAA conference play against Winston-Salem State. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
