FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Fayetteville State Broncos (2-9 overall) completed a doubleheader sweep against Carolina (10-8 overall) with a 5-4 victory in the second game on Thursday afternoon at Lamon Street Park.
The Broncos jumped to an early lead in the first inning, scoring three runs. Cheyenne Payne stole home, followed by A'Leah Wilson stealing home as well. Treja Patterson then singled to bring in Aniya Caldwell, making it 3-1.
Carolina responded in the third inning with an RBI single from Danielle Brooks, but Fayetteville State extended their lead in the bottom half with an RBI single from Angelica Locklear, bringing the score to 4-2.
In the fifth inning, Caldwell scored on a throwing error by Carolina's first baseman, giving the Broncos a 5-2 lead. Carolina attempted a comeback with runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but Fayetteville State held on for the win.
Amber Savage (1-4) earned her first win of the season, pitching a complete game and allowing four runs on ten hits. Madison Hamilton (4-2) took the loss for Carolina, giving up five runs on seven hits over six innings.
