BALTIMORE, MD -- In a thrilling contest at CFG Bank Arena, the Fayetteville State men's basketball team edged out the Virginia Union Panthers 69-66. Tairell Fletcher led the Broncos (22-7, 12-4 CIAA) with 21 points and six assists, showcasing his playmaking abilities and earning the title of Food Lion Game MVP. Javon Floyd contributed nine points and six rebounds, while Caleb Simmons added seven points and eight rebounds, helping Fayetteville State dominate the boards.
Fayetteville State, currently ranked #3 in the NCAA DII Atlantic Region, excelled on the offensive glass, pulling down 12 offensive rebounds that resulted in 21 second-chance points. The Broncos' defense was also impressive, forcing 16 Virginia Union turnovers and converting them into 22 points.
Virginia Union (15-15, 8-8 CIAA) was led by Bobby Gardner, who scored a game-high 24 points on 8-14 shooting, including 3-4 from beyond the arc. Jonathan King added 22 points and six rebounds, providing a strong inside presence for the Panthers.
The game began with Fayetteville State jumping out to an early 5-0 lead, highlighted by a three-pointer from Ezekiel Cannedy. Despite losing some of their lead, the Broncos entered halftime with a narrow 36-35 advantage, thanks to their effective three-point shooting.
In the second half, Virginia Union took a 61-58 lead before Fayetteville State responded with an 8-0 run, capped by a three-pointer from Myles Pierre, to reclaim a 66-61 lead with 2:15 remaining. The Panthers managed to narrow the gap, but the Broncos held on for the 69-66 victory, capitalizing on eight Virginia Union turnovers in the final period.
Head Coach Luke D'Alessio praised the senior leadership of the team, highlighting their crucial role in securing the win.
Fayetteville State advances to the semifinals and will face the winner of the Bluefield State and Johnson C. Smith game on Friday, February 28th at 8:00 PM. The Broncos will look to continue their strong play and secure a spot in the finals.
